Our Vision For This Site
We've been avid sports enthusiasts and MLB "stats guys" for many years, and we know there are certainly plenty of tools available for all types of baseball analytics and breakdowns.
What we could not find though, was a site that encapsulated the effectiveness of team bullpens. Sure, there are plenty of sites that have advanced Statcast data and include relief pitchers
Why We're Adding a Member Login and Subscription Model
We've been busy this offseason, and we're genuinely excited about the new features and tools heading to Inside the Pen! But alongside that good news, we need to be upfront about a change that's been a long time coming.
Starting this season, large portions of the site will move behind a login gate. A lot of our data will still be accessible with a free membership, but some of our more advanced and proprietary tools and calculations will require a moderately priced paid subscription.
This isn't a decision we made lightly. From the very beginning, we envisioned Inside the Pen as a niche baseball site that would be free to the public. We were inspired by Daily Baseball Data, which published the kind of thorough, bullpen-focused data that nobody else was bothering with. When that site announced in 2021 that it wouldn't be returning, we wanted to pick up where it left off and keep that type of resource alive for baseball fans.
' The reality is that running a free data site in today's environment is close to impossible, even when you're willing to donate hundreds of hours of your time each year to keep it going.'
Visitors expect reliable pages and up-to-the-minute data, which costs real money to maintain. AI bots and commercial scraping operations hit the site constantly, draining resources, taking our data and graphics and passing them off as their own. And traditional banner ads generate almost nothing in revenue unless you're willing to plaster the site with the most aggressive, intrusive ads out there. That's not something we're interested in doing.
We get it. Nobody needs another subscription. We feel the same way. But if Inside the Pen is something you enjoy and find useful, we hope you'll consider joining as a free member at a minimum and visiting our sponsors if their products interest you. If a paid premium membership or a donation is something you're open to, that's even better and very much appreciated.
One thing we want to be clear about: we don't sell your information, and we don't spam you with ads. Once you sign up, you won't be buried in emails, start getting strange text messages, or have your data passed around. That's a practice we genuinely can't stand, and we refuse to be part of it.
We're going to keep growing this project for as long as we can, and we have a lot of useful tools on the roadmap for baseball fans over the next few years. Thanks for sticking with us.
Play Ball!
